“Modern-day slavery is a crime that transcends borders, sectors, and jurisdictions… it is a diverse and profitable criminal industry, yet largely invisible, as it mostly affects the marginalized groups of the population,” as noted by the Walk Free Foundation.

Modern slavery refers to instances of exploitation where a person cannot refuse work or services and leave due to threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception, is in a position of servitude or has become a victim of debt bondage.
Trafficking in persons is an act of violence and a crime that affects the lives and human rights of millions of people in almost every country of the world and deprives them of their human dignity. Although the most-known form of trafficking in persons is considered to be linked with sexual exploitation, millions of people are also trafficked for the purposes of forced labor, domestic servitude, child begging or organ harvesting, criminal exploitation and coercion by terrorist organizations.

The existance of many different types of trafficking in persons means that there is no single typical portrait of a victim. Cases, occurring in all parts of the world and the variety of victims’ profiles are prove clearly that gender, age or origin are of no importance for trafficking in persons.
That is why an important component of the Network's activity is to reduce vulnerability of the population to trafficking in persons and other forms of violence, improve the system of identifying victims of trafficking in persons and other forms of violence, as well as strengthening criminal prosecution for such crimes.
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
